Chess For Change

Changing lives through
Chess

International Master Atanu Lahiri’s mission to take chess beyond cities — into the hearts of India’s villages.

About Mission

Chess for Change is an initiative by International Chess Master and Coach Atanu Lahiri, born out of a simple but powerful dream —
to use the game of chess to spark confidence, discipline, and hope in every child, no matter where they come from.

Since its beginning, this self-funded journey has reached remote villages, small schools, and communities across India.
Atanu travels on his own, carrying chessboards, books, and a belief —

that every mind deserves a chance to think boldly and move with purpose.

Our Journey so far

Through consistent outreach and self-driven efforts, Mission Chess for Change has organized workshops across villages and small towns of India.
Over the years, we’ve engaged thousands of children, teachers, and parents — spreading the message that chess is not just a game, but a tool for focus, confidence, and empowerment.

Stories from the Field

Every village, every child, every chessboard has a story.
  • A girl from a small town in Bengal who found her voice over 64 squares.

  • A group of farmers’ children now playing chess online, representing their school.

  • Young students learning to dream bigger through strategy and patience.

Mission Chess for Change

Chess for Change is an initiative of International Master of chess Atanu Lahiri to use chess as a tool for Social empowerment

CHESS FOR CHANGE- COASTAL BENGALThis time Mission Chess for Change travelled to the coastal plains of Purba Medinipur, around Contai and Digha — a land of paddy fields, ponds, green landscapes, and simple village life.We visited small schools surrounded by greenery, where most children come from families of fishermen, farmers and agriculturists. The schools are modest, the classrooms are simple, but the smiles of the children are bright and full of curiosity. Many of them had never seen a chessboard before. But as always, it did not take long. Soon the quiet classrooms turned into thinking rooms — children discussing moves, planning attacks, defending carefully, and smiling after every small victory. In these villages, life teaches patience. Farming teaches planning. Nature teaches rhythm. Perhaps that is why the children here connect with chess so naturally — because chess is also about patience, planning, and understanding the right time to act.The talent of India does not live only in big cities. It lives in small schools near paddy fields, beside village ponds, and in the minds of children who are waiting for just one opportunity.Mission Chess for Change continues to travel, one school at a time, one child at a time, one chessboard at a time. ... MISSION CHESS FOR CHANGE-DARJEELING In the hills of Darjeeling, among the world-famous tea gardens, we recently conducted Mission Chess for Change programs in several tea plantation schools. Many of these children come from very humble backgrounds and grow up in difficult environments where addiction and negative influences are common around them. Yet, when we sat with them over a chessboard, we saw something very different — bright minds, sharp observation, energy, and a strong desire to learn. For many students, it was their first introduction to chess. Within a short time, they were already thinking, planning, and playing with confidence and excitement. It was clear that talent and intelligence are everywhere — opportunity is not.Darjeeling is known across the world for its famous tea. Perhaps one day, these same hills will also be known for producing strong thinkers, leaders, and champions.A chessboard may look small, but on 64 squares a child learns patience, discipline, responsibility, and how to think before making a move — lessons that can change lives. From tea gardens to chessboards, from uncertainty to confidence — the journey has begun.Mission Chess for Change continues. ... Mission Chess for Change Assam Introducing Chess in Schools of Brahmaputra ValleyBefore Mission Chess for Change reached Kashmir, the journey had taken us to the beautiful Brahmaputra Valley of Assam last year, where we conducted our Chess for Change program across 25 schools in Kamrup Metro District. The purpose of visiting these schools was simple but important — to engage children in creative and constructive thinking, and to provide them with an enjoyable and meaningful alternative to excessive mobile use and digital addiction. Chess becomes a powerful tool in this regard, as it teaches patience, concentration, planning, and decision making. This mission in Assam was made possible with the support and active help of Biswajit Bharadwaj and Nandan Burhagohain of Assam Chess Club, along with the Department of Education, Kamrup Metro, who supported and welcomed our initiative in the schools. Our journey took us through the lush green fields, forests, and villages of the Brahmaputra Valley. One of the most interesting places we visited was Mayong, famously known as the Black Magic Capital of the World. From mythology and mystery to modern classrooms and chessboards — the journey was truly memorable. In every school we visited, the authorities were supportive, the teachers were cooperative, and the students participated with great enthusiasm and curiosity. For many of them, it was their first introduction to chess, and seeing their excitement while learning the game was the most satisfying part of the entire journey.Mission Chess for Change continues with the belief that a chessboard can become a classroom, a playground, and sometimes even a path to a better life. One move at a time, we continue the journey.#ChessForChange #assam #BrahmaputraValley #chessinschools #socialchange #education ... Mission Chess for Change Kashmir – Girls’ School, Mirmadan, AnantnagAnother day, another school in Kashmir. This time it was the Girls’ School at Mirmadan in District Anantnag. In many places, there are misconceptions that chess is “haram” in Islamic tradition, and some also believe that girls should not be exposed to sports or competitive activities. But the school authorities and the young girls of Mirmadan quietly and confidently debunked these beliefs by doing something very simple and very powerful — they sat down and learned chess.Because right thinking, learning, and education are not prohibited by any religion. Knowledge, thinking, and self-development are universal. What I saw in Mirmadan was not just a chess class. It was a small step towards confidence, independence, and gender empowerment. When girls learn to think, plan, decide, and take responsibility over the chessboard, they also learn to do the same in life.Chess is not just a game here. It is a tool for empowerment. And sometimes, real change begins with just 64 squares.#ChessForChange #Kashmir #GirlsEducation #GenderEmpowerment #ChessForChange ... See MoreSee Less
