Who is Atanu Lahiri
Atanu Lahiri is an International Chess Master, a passionate coach, and the visionary behind Mission Chess for Change. With decades of experience as a player and mentor, Atanu has dedicated his life to spreading the joy and discipline of chess far beyond tournament halls — into the villages, schools, and hearts of India’s children.
A strong believer that chess can change lives, Atanu began this mission to empower children from underprivileged and rural backgrounds. His goal is simple yet powerful — to use chess as a tool to build focus, patience, confidence, and the ability to think independently.
Through Mission Chess for Change, he travels across India — often self-funded — conducting free chess workshops and training sessions in some of the country’s most remote corners. His humble and hands-on approach has inspired countless young learners to believe in their own potential and take pride in every move they make.
What is Mission Chess for Change?
Mission Chess for Change is not just a project — it is a quiet revolution born from a simple belief: a chessboard can change a child’s life.
Our journey began in the dusty lanes of rural India, where thousands of children grow up with dreams bigger than their circumstances. I wanted to take them a tool — not of entertainment, but of empowerment. A tool that teaches thinking, confidence, patience, courage, and the art of fighting life’s battles with dignity.
In just one year, this mission has travelled to 100+ schools across India, touching the lives of 10,000+ children, many of them girl students, orphans, and tribal children. Step by step, square by square, these young minds discovered that they, too, can think boldly, plan fearlessly, and win with grace.
Mission Chess for Change is built on one promise: No child should be denied the joy of learning chess because of money.
How Are We Changing Lives Through Chess?
All our tutorials, workshops, and resources are created freely — and with love.
Today, the YouTube channel “Chess for Change” hosts 90 tutorial videos in Bengali, Hindi, and English, ensuring that every child, no matter where they live, can learn in their own language.
For me, this mission is deeply personal. I have been fortunate to serve as the National Chess Coach of six countries, to guide Grandmasters, to teach players from beginner to elite. But nothing matches the satisfaction of watching a rural child make her first confident move on the board — and in life.
